A Galeria Millan tem o prazer de anunciar a exposição Apresentação : Ruku, individual do artista e curador indígena da etnia Makuxi Jaider Esbell. Com curadoria do próprio artista e assistência curatorial da antropóloga Paula Berbert, a mostra reúne cerca de 60 obras, incluindo pinturas, objetos e desenhos, que destacam a diversa produção do artista.
Partindo da noção de artivismo — neologismo conceitual que abrange tanto o campo da arte quanto das ciências sociais —, Esbell combina pintura, escrita, desenho, instalação e performance para entrelaçar discussões interseccionais entre cosmologias, narrativas míticas originárias, espiritualidade, críticas à cultura hegemônica e preocupações socioambientais.
Suas pesquisas mais recentes vem se aprofundando também no txaísmo – modo de tecer relações de afinidades afetivas nos circuitos interculturais das artes contemporâneas pautadas pelo protagonismo indígena.
Para a exposição no Anexo Millan, o artista exibe um conjunto, produzido entre 2019 e 2021, que se debruça sobre as visões do artista em torno da árvore-pajé, Jenipapo ou Ruku, um “fruto-tecnologia e uma de minhas avós” nas palavras de Esbell, do qual se produz a tinta natural aplicada por inúmeros povos indígenas em pinturas corporais e utilizada em cerimônias rituais.
Assim descreve o artista em uma passagem de seu texto curatorial para a mostra:
“Assino, como índio que sou, essa Apresentação. É que depois de tanto arrodeio estamos ainda, e finalmente, frente a frente e não há mais para onde ir. Eu sei que sou mesmo quem me apresento e dito me foi que desse o primeiro passo. Te convido para estar ao meu lado. Deixei as armadilhas em outra casa, agora me desnudo pleno. Acredite, te trago um raro presente, aquilo que nunca mente. Queres a tua alma de volta? Disso entendemos bem, pois coube de virmos primeiro e sinto que também já não sonhas.
Desde antes do tempo vir a ser tempo, as plantas partilham entre si a maestria da vida: são portas para portais de mais mistérios. Hoje em crise, humanos, que nos achamos, ainda temos, talvez, as últimas chances de nos conectarmos ao todo. Uma moita de mato, por menor que seja o ramo, contém ali todo o antídoto para o veneno que é a megalópole: o estouro da aldeia, a perdição dos sensos. Toma um chá e cessará a febre, toma um chá e curará a dor, toma um chá e falará com Divindades. Isso nem deveria ser segredo, embora ainda seja – segregação.”

Galeria Millan is pleased to announce the exhibition Presentation : Ruku, first solo show by Makuxi indigenous artist and curator Jaider Esbell. Curated by the artist himself, with the assistance of anthropologist Paula Berbert, the show brings together around 60 works, including paintings, objects and drawings, which highlight the artist’s diverse production.
Parting from the notion of artivism—a conceptual neologism that covers both the field of art and the social sciences––Esbell combines painting, writing, drawing, installation and performance to weave intersectional discussions between cosmologies, original mythic narratives, spirituality, critiques of hegemonic culture and socio-environmental concerns, sometimes presenting them as lyrical discourse and sometimes strictly political. His more recent research has also delved into txaísmo––a way to weave relationships of affective affinity in the intercultural contemporary art circuit led by indigenous protagonism.
For the exhibition at Anexo Millan, the artist showcases a set of works, produced between 2019 and 2021, that focuses on his visions around the chief-tree known as Jenipapo or Ruku, a “fruit-technology and one of my grandmothers,” in Esbell’s words, from which is produced natural paint used by countless indigenous peoples for body painting and ritual ceremonies.
In a passage from his curatorial text for the exhibition, the artist states:
“I sign, as the Native Indian I am, this Presentation. After all, we are still, and finally, face to face and there is nowhere else to go. I know that I am who I present myself as and was told to take the first step. I invite you to be by my side. I have left the traps elsewhere; I stand now completely exposed. Believe me, I bring a rare gift, that which never lies. Do you want your soul back? This we understand well, for it was up to us to come first and I feel that you no longer dream.
Since before time was time, plants have shared amongst themselves the mastery of life: they are entryways to portals of further mysteries. Today in crisis, as the humans we believe ourselves to be, we still have, perhaps, the last opportunities to connect to the whole. A bush, no matter how small the branch, contains all the antidote for the poison that is the megalopolis: the overcrowding of the village, the perdition of senses. Drink tea and the fever will cease, drink tea and heal the pain, drink tea and speak to the Divine. That shouldn’t even be a secret, although it still is – segregation.”
